Chinese Ming - Dynasty writer Xie
Zhaozhi (1567-1624) writes that a hand
game called Shoudhling translated mean-
ing "hand command" was played during
the Han Dynasty.
1600
Mushi-Ken (Frog, Slug, Snake) was
brought to Japan in the 17th century as a
Chinese drinking game under the rame
sansukumi-ken, which translates into
"ken of the three who are afraid
of another".
1800
"Janken" is created. A hand game using
gestured to represent the three conflict-
ing elements of rock, paper and scissors
are created between the Edo and Meiji
periods.
1900
Rock, Paper, Scissors had spread beyond
Asia, especially through increased Japa-
nese contact with the West.
1924
In Britain it was described in a letter to
The Times as a hand game called "Zhot".
1927
La Vie au Patronage, a childrens maga-
zine in France described the game as a
Japanese game with the name
"Chi-fou-mi", based on the Old Japanese
words for one, two, three "hi, fu, mi".
1932
A New York TImes has an that article
describes the rules of rock paper scissors
for the benefit of American readers.

Compton's Pictured Encyclopedia
described rock paper scissors as a
common method of settling disputes
between children.
